The fourth-largest state on a single printed page: Montana with Helena, Billings and the other main cities, 56 county borders and the long straight Canadian border.
What prints
Montana covers 147,040 square miles, so squeezing it onto one page means the scale is coarse — roughly 60 miles to the inch on Letter paper in landscape. What survives at that scale is the outline: the 49th parallel across the top for about 550 miles, the straight eastern border with the Dakotas, the stepped southern border with Wyoming, and the jagged western border with Idaho that follows the Bitterroot Range and the Continental Divide before dropping to a straight meridian line in the panhandle notch. The 56 county borders print as fine lines and are mostly large enough to read; the small ones — Silver Bow around Butte, Deer Lodge, Golden Valley — are the exceptions. Helena is marked as capital, and the Major cities layer adds Billings, Missoula, Great Falls, Bozeman and Butte.
Page orientation
Landscape is the only sensible choice. Montana is about 550 miles east to west and about 320 miles north to south; in portrait it would occupy a thin band across the middle of the page. Even in landscape the western third, where the counties are small and the border is complicated, benefits from a second zoomed print. The eastern plains counties such as Garfield, Valley and Phillips are each larger than Rhode Island and print clearly.

Neither the Continental Divide nor the Missouri River is drawn on the plain map. The Divide enters from Canada at Glacier National Park and runs south past Helena and Butte into Wyoming; students can trace it with the help of the Continental Divide map. The Missouri begins at Three Forks southeast of Helena and leaves the state near the North Dakota line — see the Missouri River map.
