- Texas has the most counties (254); Delaware the fewest (3).
- Louisiana calls them parishes; Alaska uses boroughs, with unorganized areas grouped into census areas.
- Connecticut and Rhode Island have counties with no government; they are geographic labels only. Connecticut now reports statistics by nine planning regions.
- Virginia has 38 independent cities that are outside any county, which is why it counts 133 county-equivalents. Baltimore, St. Louis and Carson City are also independent cities.
- Largest county by area: North Slope Borough, Alaska (94,796 sq mi). In the contiguous states: San Bernardino County, California (20,105 sq mi). Most populous: Los Angeles County (10 million).
