Printable capitals US map worksheet

State outlines with a dot at each of the fifty capitals and nothing labeled: the worksheet for naming capitals (or states, or both) by hand.

Press Capitals before printing to add the capital dots to the blank outline. Press Abbreviations as well if you want the states identified and only the capitals to be filled in.

What prints

The blank outline of the 50 states with a small filled circle at the location of each state capital. No names, no codes, no cities other than capitals. Alaska's dot is at Juneau in the Panhandle and Hawaii's at Honolulu on Oahu, both in the inset boxes. Because the map is blank, the sheet can be used two ways: name the capital at each dot, or name both the state and its capital. If you only want to test capitals, press Abbreviations before printing so that each state carries its code.

A few dots need care. Annapolis and Dover are 60 miles apart on either side of Chesapeake Bay and Delaware Bay. Providence, Hartford and Boston form a tight triangle. Trenton sits on the Delaware River on New Jersey's western edge, and Carson City is on Nevada's western edge next to Lake Tahoe, far from Las Vegas.

Print settings

  1. Press the Print button on the map (or Ctrl+P / Cmd+P). The page switches to a print layout with the map only — no header, navigation or text.
  2. Orientation: Landscape. The contiguous states are about 1.6 times as wide as they are tall, which matches a landscape Letter or A4 sheet almost exactly.
  3. Margins: Default or Minimum. Turn off Headers and footers so the URL and date do not print.
  4. Scale: 100%, or Fit to page if your browser offers it.
  5. To make a PDF instead of a paper copy, choose Save as PDF as the destination.

Exercises

  1. Name the dot. Write the capital's name next to each dot. Check with the answer key. Score out of 50.
  2. Capital or largest city? Next to each dot write C if the capital is also the state's largest city, or the name of the largest city if it is not. Only 17 capitals are the largest city; the other 33 are not.
  3. Odd one out. Find the capitals that are not near the centre of their state — Juneau, Carson City, Trenton, Tallahassee, Olympia, Sacramento — and write one reason each was chosen.
  4. Distance. Using the scale of the printed map (about 1 inch = 250 miles on Letter), estimate the distance between Austin and Oklahoma City, then Sacramento and Carson City, then Boston and Concord.
  5. Rivers. Fourteen capitals sit on a major river: mark the ones on the Mississippi (Saint Paul, Baton Rouge), the Missouri (Bismarck, Pierre, Jefferson City) and the Ohio (Frankfort is on the Kentucky, just short of it — a trick question).
