Printable labeled US map
All fifty states with their full names written on the map, on one landscape page. This is the answer key to the blank map and the sheet to study from before a quiz.
What prints
The sheet shows the 48 contiguous states at a single scale with the state name inside each one, plus Alaska and Hawaii in inset boxes at reduced scale. State borders are drawn as solid lines; there are no county lines, cities, rivers or roads. Small states in the Northeast — Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maryland — have their names placed beside the state with a leader line, since the names do not fit inside. The map is drawn as vectors, so it prints sharp at Letter, A4, Legal or Tabloid size.
Print settings
- Press the Print button on the map (or Ctrl+P / Cmd+P). The page switches to a print layout with the map only — no header, navigation or text.
- Orientation: Landscape. The contiguous states are about 1.6 times as wide as they are tall, which matches a landscape Letter or A4 sheet almost exactly.
- Margins: Default or Minimum. Turn off Headers and footers so the URL and date do not print.
- Scale: 100%, or Fit to page if your browser offers it.
- To make a PDF instead of a paper copy, choose Save as PDF as the destination.
Exercises
- Cover and recall. Print this sheet and the blank map. Study the labeled one for five minutes, then fill in the blank one from memory. Mark the misses, study only those, and repeat. Most people go from 20 correct to 45 in three rounds.
- Regions by colour. Using the labeled sheet, shade the nine Northeast states one colour, the twelve Midwest states another, the sixteen South states a third and the thirteen West states a fourth. Check against the regions map.
- Borders count. Next to each state name, write how many other states it touches. Missouri and Tennessee each touch eight; Maine touches one.
- Alphabet run. Number the states 1–50 in alphabetical order on the map (Alabama 1, Wyoming 50). It forces you to find each state by name rather than by shape.
- Capitals overlay. Press Capitals before printing and write each capital's name next to its dot; check with the capitals answer key.
