How to use this map
- Find a state: hover to highlight it, click for its capital and largest city, then follow the link to its full page.
- Labels: the map opens with two-letter abbreviations. Use State names to switch to full names, or turn both off for a blank outline.
- Zoom: use the + / − buttons, or click the map first and then scroll. Scrolling is off until the map is focused so it doesn't trap the page.
- Print: the Print button hides everything except the map. For a labeled or blank classroom sheet, use the printable maps page, which sets page size and margins.
Quick facts about the United States map
- 50 states, one federal district (Washington, DC) and five inhabited territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, US Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands).
- 48 states are contiguous. Alaska borders Canada; Hawaii is an island chain about 2,400 mi from California.
- Largest state by area: Alaska (665,384 sq mi). Smallest: Rhode Island (1,545 sq mi). Texas is the largest of the contiguous states.
- Most populous: California (39.5 million, 2020). Least populous: Wyoming (577,000).
- Four states touch at one point: Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico — the Four Corners.
- Missouri and Tennessee each border eight other states, the most of any state. Maine borders only one (New Hampshire).

Yes. Boundary data is public domain from the US Census Bureau and the site has no ads or sign-up. Print or screenshot anything you need for school or personal use.
Why aren't Alaska and Hawaii shown at first?
Showing both makes the other 48 states very small. Press Alaska & Hawaii to zoom out, or open Alaska and Hawaii directly.
Where is Washington, DC?
Between Maryland and Virginia on the Potomac River. It is not a state, so it has no outline of its own on the state map, but it is marked on the cities map.
Can I get a blank map without any borders inside?
