The 50 states and their capitals
Capitals that are not the largest city
Thirty-three capitals are not their state's biggest city. Many were chosen in the 1800s for a central location or as a compromise between rival cities — Sacramento over San Francisco, Tallahassee halfway between St. Augustine and Pensacola, Jefferson City on the Missouri River. Only 17 capitals are also the largest city, among them Phoenix, Denver, Boston, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Oklahoma City, Nashville, Salt Lake City and Honolulu.
Smallest and largest capitals
Montpelier, Vermont is the smallest state capital (about 8,000 people). Phoenix, Arizona is the largest (1.6 million). Juneau, Alaska is the only capital not reachable by road from the rest of its state.
