What the outline shows

The map draws the state boundary and nothing else. All four edges are surveyed straight lines: the 45th parallel on the north against Montana, the 41st parallel on the south against Colorado and Utah, a meridian at about 104°W on the east against South Dakota and Nebraska, and a meridian at about 111°W on the west against Idaho and Utah. Like Colorado, the state is a quadrilateral with no natural border. No rivers, ranges, Yellowstone or county lines appear. Press Capital to mark Cheyenne in the southeast corner, close to both Colorado and Nebraska, and Abbreviation for "WY". Because the outline gives no clues, this is a demanding base for a test of the state's interior.

Portrait or landscape

Wyoming is about 365 miles east to west and about 275 miles north to south, a 4:3 rectangle. Print in landscape. The rectangle fills the width of the sheet with a margin at the bottom for a key. In portrait it would sit in the middle third of the page. The state's main ranges, the Wind River, Bighorn and Absaroka, run northwest to southeast or north–south, and the North Platte crosses the southeast, so landscape gives every feature room.

Five classroom exercises

1. Shade Yellowstone National Park in the northwest corner and mark Yellowstone Lake and Old Faithful inside it; then draw Grand Teton just south of it.
2. Draw the Continental Divide from Yellowstone southeast through the Wind River Range to the Colorado line, and mark the Great Divide Basin where it splits in two.
3. Draw the North Platte River entering from Colorado, flowing north past Casper and then east to Nebraska, and the Green River flowing south to Utah.
4. Place Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie, Gillette and Rock Springs, and mark South Pass, the Oregon Trail crossing of the Divide.
5. Draw the Bighorn Mountains in the north-central part of the state and the Bighorn River flowing north into Montana.

How to recognise the Wyoming outline

• A plain rectangle, wider than tall, with four straight edges.
• One of two states with no natural border at all; the other is Colorado, which is a little wider.
• Its northwest corner holds Yellowstone; its southeast corner holds the capital.
• Fits into Utah's notch: the southwest corner of Wyoming is the corner of Utah's missing rectangle.
