Borders: North Carolina, Georgia. The Atlantic Ocean lies to the southeast.

What the outline shows

The map draws the state's boundary. The southwest edge is the Savannah River, the whole border with Georgia, from the mountains to the sea at Savannah. The north edge with North Carolina is a series of straight surveyed segments that step down toward the coast, with a notable jog near the Catawba River and another near the coast at the Little River. The southeast edge is about 190 miles of Atlantic coast, with the Sea Islands, Charleston Harbor and the Grand Strand around Myrtle Beach. Nothing inside is drawn. Press Capital to mark Columbia in the centre of the state at the Fall Line, and Abbreviation for "SC".

Portrait or landscape

South Carolina is about 270 miles from the northwest corner to the coast at Hilton Head and about 200 miles north to south. The triangle is wider than tall, so landscape prints larger. The pointed western end then sits at the top left with space below it for a key. Portrait is acceptable if a long list must fit under the map, but the coast is then pushed to the right-hand margin.

Five classroom exercises

  1. Trace the Savannah River as the entire Georgia border and mark Augusta, Georgia, on the far bank about halfway down.
  2. Draw the Santee River system: the Broad and Saluda meeting at Columbia to form the Congaree, then the Santee flowing southeast to the coast.
  3. Draw the Fall Line through Columbia and Camden and shade the Upcountry above it and the Lowcountry below.
  4. Place Charleston, Columbia, North Charleston, Mount Pleasant and Greenville, and mark Charleston Harbor with Fort Sumter at its mouth.
  5. Draw the Pee Dee River from North Carolina southeast to Winyah Bay at Georgetown, and mark Myrtle Beach on the Grand Strand north of it.
