What the outline shows

The map is the outer boundary of Georgia only. The top edge is a straight line along the 35th parallel against Tennessee and North Carolina. The northeast and east edge follows the Savannah River from its headwaters down to the Atlantic at Savannah. About 100 miles of coast, fringed by the Sea Islands, run from the Savannah mouth to the St. Marys River. The south edge with Florida follows the St. Marys briefly and then a straight line west to the Chattahoochee. The west edge is the Chattahoochee River up to West Point, then a straight line north to Tennessee. Georgia has more counties than any state but Texas, and none of the 159 borders are drawn here. Capital adds Atlanta in the northwest quadrant.

Portrait or landscape

Georgia is about 300 miles from north to south and 230 miles at its widest, near the Florida border. The outline is taller than it is wide, so portrait gives the largest map. It also lets the tapering north end, where the state narrows between the Savannah and Chattahoochee headwaters, sit comfortably at the top of the page. Landscape shrinks the map by about a third and is only useful for a worksheet with a wide answer table beside the map.

Five classroom exercises

1. Trace the Savannah River from the northeast corner down to the coast, and mark that it is the entire South Carolina border.
2. Draw the Chattahoochee from the north Georgia mountains southwest through Atlanta's outskirts to the Alabama line, then south along that border to Florida.
3. Draw the Fall Line across the state through Columbus, Macon and Augusta, and shade the Piedmont above it and the Coastal Plain below.
4. Locate Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, Macon and Savannah; note that four of the five are Fall Line or river cities.
5. Shade the Okefenokee Swamp in the southeast corner and draw the Suwannee and St. Marys rivers leaving it in opposite directions.

How to recognise the Georgia outline

• A rough trapezoid, narrow at the top and wide at the bottom.
• A straight top edge, a straight bottom edge, and two river edges on the sides.
• The east side slants from upper left to lower right, following the Savannah.
• A short, notched Atlantic coast at the bottom right with the Sea Islands strung along it.
