Hawaii-Aleutian Time Zone map
The Hawaii-Aleutian Time Zone is UTC−10, the westernmost zone used by any US state. Hawaii does not observe daylight saving, so it is five hours behind New York in winter and six in summer.
Offset and daylight saving
Hawaii Standard Time (HST) is UTC−10. Hawaii opted out of the Uniform Time Act in 1967 and has never changed its clocks since; at 21°N the day length varies by only about two and a half hours over the year, so shifting clocks would save nothing. The Aleutian Islands west of 169°30′W (Adak, Atka, Attu) are in the same zone but, being part of Alaska, do observe daylight saving, running at UTC−9 in summer. For eight months of the year Adak is therefore an hour ahead of Honolulu despite sharing its zone.
What the zone covers
| Area | Capital or main town | Population (2020) | Daylight saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hawaii (HI) | Honolulu | 1,455,271 | No |
| Aleutian Islands west of 169°30′W (Alaska) | Adak | — | Yes |
All eight main Hawaiian islands — Hawaii (the Big Island), Maui, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau and Kahoolawe — lie between 154°W and 160°W, comfortably within a single zone. The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands stretch a further 1,200 miles to Kure Atoll at 178°W but are uninhabited apart from field stations.
Cities and towns on Hawaii time

Honolulu's 2020 figure is for the urban Honolulu census-designated place; the whole island of Oahu is one city-county, Honolulu County, with about two-thirds of the state's population.
Where the boundaries are
Because the zone consists of islands, its boundaries are lines at sea. To the east, the next US time is Alaska (UTC−9), with the boundary at 169°30′W in the Aleutian chain; the nearest mainland time is Pacific, two hours ahead in winter and three in summer. To the west, the International Date Line lies about 1,500 miles beyond Kauai; Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, US territories on the other side of it, are at UTC+10, a full 20 hours ahead of Honolulu. American Samoa, to the south, is at UTC−11, one hour behind Hawaii and the last inhabited US time of any day.
