Printable Texas map

What prints

Everything from the Panhandle at 36.5°N to the mouth of the Rio Grande at Brownsville fits on the sheet, which means the scale is coarse: at Letter size one inch covers roughly 90 miles. That is enough to show the shape clearly — the square Panhandle, the western bulge to El Paso, the Gulf coast curving southwest — but the 254 counties are dense. The Panhandle counties are near-perfect squares and print cleanly; the small counties of Central Texas around Austin and Waco become fine grey lattice. Austin is marked with the capital star. The Major cities layer adds Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth and El Paso.

Texas is a split time-zone state. El Paso and Hudspeth counties, the two westernmost, observe Mountain time; the other 252 observe Central time. The zone boundary is not drawn on the printed sheet.

Page orientation

Texas is about 800 miles across and about 800 miles tall, so it fits a page in either direction. Portrait is the better choice: the outline is slightly taller than wide once the Rio Grande tip below Laredo is included, and portrait leaves room beneath the map for the key. If you want the county lines readable in the crowded central belt, print on Tabloid or A3 in portrait instead; a vector map scales without losing sharpness.

• Austin as capital, on the Colorado River in Central Texas.
• Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth and El Paso as Major cities.
• County borders for all 254 counties, from Dallam in the northwest corner of the Panhandle to Cameron at the Rio Grande delta.
• The Red River border with Oklahoma, the Sabine River border with Louisiana, the surveyed lines with New Mexico, and the Rio Grande border with Mexico.

Names of counties do not print. For the full list of 254 counties and seats see the Texas county map; for an outline with no marks at all use the blank Texas map. Note that the Houston, Dallas and Fort Worth labels cluster in the east and may overlap the county lines at small sizes; scaling the print to 110 percent or higher separates them.
