What the outline shows

The map draws Oregon's boundary. The north edge is the Columbia River from the Pacific to just east of the Wallula Gap, then a straight line along the 46th parallel to Idaho. The east edge is the Snake River through Hells Canyon in the north and a straight meridian in the south. The south edge with California and Nevada is the 42nd parallel. The west is the Pacific coast, from the Columbia mouth to the California line, with Coos Bay, Tillamook Bay and the Columbia estuary visible. No counties, rivers or cities are drawn inside. Press Capital to mark Salem in the Willamette Valley, south of Portland and not on the coast. Most of Oregon is on Pacific time; most of Malheur County on the Idaho border is on Mountain time.

Portrait or landscape

Oregon is about 400 miles east to west and about 295 miles north to south. Print in landscape. The rectangle fills the width of the page and the Columbia's course along the top and the coast on the left both have room. Portrait would shrink the outline to about three-quarters of the size. For the Willamette Valley and the Cascades alone, zoom to the western third and switch to portrait, since that band is tall and narrow.

Five classroom exercises

1. Trace the Columbia River along the northern border from the Pacific to the point where the boundary leaves it, and mark Washington across it.
2. Draw the Willamette River flowing north from Eugene through Salem to the Columbia at Portland, and shade the Willamette Valley.
3. Draw the Cascade Range as a north–south line about 100 miles inland and mark Mount Hood; then shade the high desert to the east.
4. Draw the Snake River along the Idaho border through Hells Canyon and mark the change to a straight border south of it.
5. Place Portland, Salem, Eugene, Gresham and Bend, then mark Crater Lake in the southern Cascades.

How to recognise the Oregon outline

• A rectangle wider than tall with a straight bottom edge and a straight lower-right edge.
• A wavy top edge (the Columbia) that turns straight in the east.
• A wavy upper-right edge (the Snake) that cuts in toward the northwest.
• A gently curved Pacific coast on the left with the wide mouth of the Columbia at the top corner.
