What prints

The print view removes the toolbar, header and footer and leaves the New York outline zoomed to fill the page. Inside the state boundary the 62 counties appear as fine grey lines, so the tiny New York City boroughs (New York, Kings, Queens, Bronx and Richmond counties) sit at the bottom right as a cluster of small shapes while St. Lawrence County, the largest by area, spreads across the top along the Canadian border. The Great Lakes shoreline along Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, the Long Island coast and the Hudson–Champlain corridor are all part of the vector outline. Albany carries the capital star; the Major cities layer adds New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers and Syracuse. Nothing is rasterised, so a Letter print and a poster-size print both keep clean edges.

Page orientation

Use landscape. New York measures roughly 330 miles from the Pennsylvania line to the Canadian border and about 285 miles from Buffalo east to the Vermont line, but Long Island pushes the eastern extent much further, so the state's bounding box is wider than it is tall. In landscape the Southern Tier counties along the Pennsylvania border and the Finger Lakes counties keep enough room for pencil labels. Printing in portrait shrinks the whole map to the middle third of the sheet and turns Long Island into a sliver.

What is labeled

Lakes are not filled on the printed sheet, so the Finger Lakes and Lake Champlain do not show unless you switch to the Streets layer first. County names are also left off, which makes the page a good worksheet: have students find Erie County (Buffalo), Monroe County (Rochester), Onondaga County (Syracuse) and Westchester County (Yonkers), then check the New York county map. The blank New York map strips the county lines and cities too.
