What prints

The Illinois sheet shows the state's tapered outline, widest along the Wisconsin line at 42.5°N and narrowing to the point where the Ohio meets the Mississippi at Cairo. Its 102 counties print as fine grey lines; the rectangular counties of the prairie interior contrast with the irregular river counties along the Mississippi, Illinois and Wabash. Springfield carries the capital star in the centre of the state. The Major cities layer adds Chicago on the Lake Michigan shore, Aurora and Joliet in its western and southern suburbs, Naperville, and Rockford on the Rock River in the north. The map is vector, so a Letter, A4 or Tabloid print is equally sharp, and the Chicago-area county borders (Cook, DuPage, Lake, Will, Kane) stay legible even though they are the smallest on the page.

Page orientation

Illinois runs about 390 miles north to south and roughly 210 miles across at its widest, so portrait is the right choice. In portrait the state takes the full height of an A4 or Letter sheet and the southern tip near Cairo is not lost against the bottom edge. Landscape would leave large blank areas on either side and would make the crowded northeast, where six large cities sit within 100 miles of each other, difficult to read. Print at 100 percent scale; do not use "fit to page" if you want the county borders drawn at full line weight.

What is labeled

Because county names are not printed, the page works as a quiz sheet: mark Cook County, find Sangamon around the capital, trace the Illinois River from its mouth near Grafton up to the Chicago area. Check answers on the Illinois county map. For a plain outline with nothing marked, use the blank Illinois map.
