The whole of California — 770 miles of it — on one printed page, with Sacramento, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco marked and the 58 county lines drawn.
What prints
California is long and thin on the diagonal, and the printed sheet shows it from the 42nd-parallel border with Oregon down to the Mexican line south of San Diego. The 58 counties range from San Bernardino, the largest county in the contiguous US, to tiny San Francisco, which occupies the tip of its peninsula. Both extremes print clearly; the trouble spots are the Bay Area counties — Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Alameda, Contra Costa — which crowd together around the bay. Sacramento wears the capital star in the Central Valley. The Major cities layer adds Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco and Fresno, which places three dots in the south, two on the bay and one in the valley.
Page orientation
Print in portrait. The state runs northwest to southeast and stands far taller than it is wide, so portrait Letter or A4 fits it with only a little wasted space in the top-right and bottom-left corners. In landscape the state is reduced to about two thirds the size and the Bay Area counties become unreadable. If you need the Bay Area itself at a usable scale, zoom the map to that region before pressing Print and treat the result as a companion sheet.

- All 58 county borders, including the straight-edged desert counties of the southeast and the long thin coastal counties.
- The 42°N Oregon line, the two straight segments of the Nevada border that meet at Lake Tahoe, the Colorado River section with Arizona, and the Mexican border.
The map is a good fit for a Sierra Nevada or Central Valley lesson: students can draw the Sierra crest along the Nevada line, mark the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers meeting in the Delta east of the bay, and shade the Mojave in the southeast. County names are on the county map, and a label-free sheet is on the blank California map.
