What the outline shows

The map draws the state boundary. The north edge is the Lake Superior shore, including the Apostle Islands, then the Montreal, Brule and Menominee rivers against Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The east edge is Lake Michigan, with Green Bay cut in behind the Door Peninsula and Milwaukee's bay further south. The south edge with Illinois is a straight line. The west edge is the Mississippi River from the Illinois corner north to Prescott, then the St. Croix River and a short straight line to Lake Superior, all against Minnesota; a short stretch of the Mississippi faces Iowa in the southwest. Nothing inside is drawn. Press Capital to mark Madison, between two lakes in the south-central part of the state, 75 miles west of Milwaukee.

Portrait or landscape

Wisconsin is about 310 miles from north to south and about 260 miles east to west. Print in portrait. The map fills the page height, with the Door Peninsula in the top right and the Mississippi bluffs along the left edge both at a size that can be traced. Landscape shrinks the map by about a fifth. The state's two big rivers, the Wisconsin and the Mississippi, run mostly north–south and south, so they fit the tall page.

Five classroom exercises

1. Trace the Mississippi along the west edge and mark Minnesota and Iowa across it; then draw the St. Croix joining it at Prescott.
2. Draw the Wisconsin River from the Michigan border south through the centre of the state, turning west at Portage to reach the Mississippi at Prairie du Chien.
3. Shade the Door Peninsula and Green Bay, and mark the city of Green Bay at the head of the bay with the Fox River flowing into it.
4. Place Milwaukee, Madison, Green Bay, Kenosha and Racine, and note that four of the five lie along Lake Michigan.
5. Draw the Apostle Islands off the Lake Superior shore and shade the Driftless Area in the southwest, which the glaciers missed.

How to recognise the Wisconsin outline

• A rough square with a mitten-like thumb, the Door Peninsula, sticking up on the right.
• A straight bottom edge and a wavy left edge (the Mississippi and St. Croix).
• A top edge that is partly lake shore and partly river, with the Apostle Islands at the top left.
• A right edge that is entirely Lake Michigan shore, with Green Bay cut in behind the thumb.
