A blank outline of Rhode Island, the smallest state, with Narragansett Bay cutting a third of the way up through it. The five counties have no government and are not drawn.
What the outline shows
The map draws the boundary of Rhode Island at a large scale, since the whole state is only about 48 miles from north to south and 37 miles from east to west. The north and east edges are straight lines against Massachusetts, with a jog near the Blackstone River. The west edge with Connecticut is a straight line, then the Pawcatuck River to the sea. The south is the Atlantic coast and the mouth of Narragansett Bay, which reaches north almost to Providence and holds Aquidneck Island, Conanicut Island and Prudence Island. Block Island lies about ten miles offshore. Nothing inside is shown. Press Capital to mark Providence at the head of the bay, and Abbreviation for "RI".
Portrait or landscape
Rhode Island is slightly taller than wide, so portrait gives the larger print, and the bay runs up the page rather than across it. Because the state is so small, the print is at a bigger scale than any other blank state map on this site: one inch on the page is about five miles, which makes it possible to mark towns and even individual islands accurately. Landscape works if a wide answer table is needed beside the outline.
Five classroom exercises
- Draw Narragansett Bay from its mouth up to Providence, then label Aquidneck Island with Newport at its south end.
- Draw the Blackstone River entering from Massachusetts at Woonsocket and flowing south to Pawtucket and the bay.
- Mark Block Island off the south coast and draw Block Island Sound between it and the mainland.
- Place Providence, Warwick, Cranston, Pawtucket and Newport; note that four of the five are within ten miles of the capital.
- Draw the Pawcatuck River along the southern Connecticut border and mark Westerly at its mouth.
How to recognise the Rhode Island outline
- A small, roughly square outline with a deep bay cut into the bottom, splitting the lower half.
- Several islands sit inside the bay, the largest of them Aquidneck.
- A straight left edge and straight top edge; the right edge steps.
- A single small island, Block Island, off the south coast.
