A blank outline of Oklahoma, with its long thin Panhandle pointing west and the Red River along the south. All 77 county lines are hidden.
What the outline shows
The map shows only the state boundary. The north edge is the 37th parallel against Kansas and, at the far west, Colorado. The Panhandle, about 170 miles long and 35 miles wide, runs west between Kansas and Colorado above and Texas below. The west edge of the main body is a straight line against Texas, and the south edge is the Red River, meandering east to Arkansas. The east edge against Arkansas is straight, with a small jog near Fort Smith, and the short northeast edge with Missouri is also straight. Nothing is drawn inside. Press Capital to mark Oklahoma City in the centre of the state, and Abbreviation for "OK".
Portrait or landscape
Oklahoma is about 470 miles from the western tip of the Panhandle to the Arkansas line and about 230 miles north to south in the main body. Print in landscape. Portrait would make the Panhandle almost impossible to write on. In landscape the Panhandle occupies the top left with the main body filling the rest, and there is space below the Panhandle for a key. If the Panhandle is not needed, zoom to the main body, which is a little wider than tall and still prints best in landscape.
Five classroom exercises
- Trace the Red River as the whole southern border of the main body and label Texas across it.
- Draw the Arkansas River entering from Kansas in the northeast, flowing southeast past Tulsa and leaving at Fort Smith on the Arkansas line.
- Draw the Canadian River entering from the Texas Panhandle, passing south of Oklahoma City and joining the Arkansas in the east.
- Shade the Panhandle and name the three states that surround it: Kansas, Colorado and Texas, plus New Mexico at its tip.
- Place Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Norman, Broken Arrow and Lawton, and draw the Ouachita Mountains in the southeast corner.
How to recognise the Oklahoma outline
- A block with a long thin handle, the Panhandle, sticking out of the top left, like a saucepan or a meat cleaver.
- A straight top edge and a wavy bottom edge (the Red River).
- A short straight west edge below the Panhandle against Texas.
- A nearly straight east edge with a small notch near Fort Smith.
